Art Therapy, Teaching, and the unexpected depth of healing through creativity.
There are students who complete a course. And then there are students who are changed by one.
Amne Mustapha, a teacher and our Student of the Month for April, came to Health & Harmony's Art Therapy Practitioner course already deeply connected to art. What she didn't expect was how profoundly it would connect her to herself.
The artwork, below, created during her study of the Art Therapy Practitioner Course, speaks to exactly that. Amne describes it as her vision of a therapeutic space:
"This artwork was inspired by my idea of a calm and peaceful space where clients feel safe to express themselves. It gives me a sense of peace, serenity and stillness, like a place you can fully immerse yourself in. While creating it, I imagined a quiet environment where healing can happen naturally. I used oil paints because they allowed me to blend colours softly and create depth, reflecting calmness and growth. The message behind this artwork is about creating a safe space where clients can slow down, feel understood and begin to heal through art."
"Its been a deeply personal and reflective journey"
For Amne, the experience went well beyond completing modules. Each lesson became an opportunity to slow down, connect with her emotions, and express things that had previously been difficult to put into words.
"I am incredibly grateful for my experience with Health & Harmony. This course has been more than just learning about art therapy, it has been a deeply personal and reflective journey. Each module allowed me to slow down and connect with my emotions and express things that are often difficult to put into words."
What stood out to her most was the quality and intention behind the portfolio tasks — work that felt meaningful rather than mechanical.
"Each piece allowed me to genuinely connect with my thoughts and feelings and I found myself creating work that held real personal significance. It wasn't just about completing tasks, it was about understanding myself on a deeper level."
From teacher to art therapist
Amne has taught for many years. She knew art was powerful. But the course shifted something in how she understood that power.
"What surprised me most was how powerful and intentional art can be as a tool for healing. It has truly opened my eyes to the depth of what art can do beyond the classroom."
That insight didn't stay in her studies, it moved directly into her teaching practice.
"This experience has supported me both personally and professionally. I have already begun integrating many of the approaches and ideas into my teaching and I can see the impact it has not only on myself but also on the way I guide and support my students."
What Amne wants you to know
For anyone considering making a similar leap, whether you're an educator, a creative, or simply someone curious about the intersection of art and healing, Amne's message is straightforward.
"I would absolutely recommend Health & Harmony to anyone considering this journey. It is supportive, insightful and genuinely transformative."
