What goes on an invoice in Australia

The generator handles all of this for you. Here's what it's doing, so you know your invoice is complete.

Not registered for GST

Most new small businesses start here.

  • Call it an Invoice, never a "Tax invoice"
  • Your business name and ABN
  • The date, an invoice number and when it's due
  • What you supplied, and the price
  • A line saying no GST has been charged
  • How your client can pay you

Tip: always quote your ABN. Without one, a business paying you may have to hold back 47% of any payment over $75.

Registered for GST

Required once your turnover reaches $75,000 a year.

  • The words Tax invoice
  • Your business name and ABN
  • The date you issued it
  • What you supplied, with the quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or that the total includes GST
  • For $1,000 or more, your client's name or ABN too

Tip: switch on "Registered for GST?" in step 1 and the generator adds the right title, the GST line and a reminder at $1,000.
